John Coltrane Jazz Series Campaign

John Coltrane Jazz Series Campaign

Setting the Tone

This project promoted a John Coltrane jazz event at The Walters Art Gallery. I wanted the visuals to feel expressive and energetic, with subtle influence from mid-century American jazz design. Those layouts often pulled from Swiss principles but carried more rhythm and personality, which felt fitting for Coltrane’s sound. I also incorporated Coltrane’s real signature into the design as a nod to his legacy and to ground the composition in something authentic.

Painting the Sound

I stepped away from my usual photo-based process and created everything from scratch. Using paint, I experimented with tools and textures until I found something that captured the right feeling. I used a Welch’s fruit snack gummy to stamp the impression of a saxophone after seeing my roommate eating some, and added layers using a fork and butterknife to bring more depth and motion. Those paintings became the base for the entire campaign, which included posters, tickets, and a billboard that all shared the same visual rhythm.
